good friday

photo from here

"By now it was noon. The whole earth became dark, the darkness lasting three hours - a total blackout. The Temple curtain split right down the middle. Jesus called loudly, 'Father, I place my life in your hands!' Then He breathed His last."
(Luke 23:44-46)

"I'll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross."

in the kitchen: baked oatmeal

This stuff is soo good. It has become the new family favorite at breakfast time and it makes the whole house smell delicious!
Okay...here is the recipe:

Innkeeper's Baked Oatmeal
In one bowl, mix:
3 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
Add cinnamon and/or nutmeg (optional, to taste)
At this point, mix can be set aside until morning.
When ready to bake, butter a two quart casserole dish and set aside. Into dry ingredients, stir:
3/4 of a cube of butter
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 cups milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Options: Can add raisins, chopped apples, nuts, shredded coconut into the mix as well!
Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes. Top with yogurt, honey, extra toasted nuts, or my favorite, toasted shredded coconut!

Warning: this stuff is addicting.

what to do with doilies: make cards!

Lately I have been having fun experimenting with different ways to use doilies. They are cheap, pretty, and decorative and there are tons of different things to do with them!
Here is one idea...

thoughts on being content

I came across this verse this morning when I was reading my Bible and it really made me think:

"You're blessed when you're content with just who you are - no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can't be bought." (Matthew 5:5, The Message)

There are very few days that go by where I don't think something along the lines of, "I wish I could do this, or buy this, or look like this, or..."
Often I think of the times when I felt completely content: on mission trips to Canada and New Orleans, times when I am leading or led in worship, when I was in China volunteering at a foster home. The one thing that all of those have in common is that I was/am apart of something bigger, and better, than myself. I was dedicating my energy to serving others and putting their needs in front of my own. I didn't have time to think about trivial material things, or how "my life would just be complete if I had (fill in the blank). The fleeting moments of happiness I get out of something I've bought pale in comparison to the joy I get from the time spent seeing God move in people through music, or holding a precious sleeping baby who has been through more trauma than I have in my lifetime, or building a house for someone who has been living in a tent since Hurricane Katrina.
But then again, I think, "Is it wrong to want some material things?" I spend $20 on an adorable shirt and then see the Made In China label and think of the beautiful and hardworking people I met in China and wonder, "Is it worth it?"
I guess it all comes back to moderation and balance. I am always so inspired by people who seem to have come somewhere close to that balance and aren't driven and controlled by their "stuff". Someday I hope to get to that place too, but I guess its all about the journey.

Phew this is a long post!

snapshots of the moment. (v.2)

listening to: Kristian Stanfill's new cd "Mountains Move"
wishing: I had enough time to catch up on GLEE and The Office
inspired by: "But that's not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in Him, so you can see and hear Him clearly. You don't need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without Him. When you come to Him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything." (Colossians 2:9-10, The Message)
loving: photos of my great grandparents (isn't she beautiful?)
craving: yummy spinach salad (recipe to come!)

just keep moving

Junior year is hard. Looking at colleges, ACT/SAT tests, applications, personal statements, (the list goes on) all make it hard to stay motivated to keep going. Most mornings I feel like turning off my alarm clock and going back to sleep forever. However, I know that it is more important than ever to stay on top of deadlines (and life in general) so that I can transition into this next exciting stage of my life!
Sometimes all I need is a quote like this one to remind me to keep going strong.

friday favorites

I honestly can't stop laughing- too funny!

My favorite parts of this week:
-getting a job teaching a graphic/media class for a week in the summer with the best friend
-getting back into the darkroom at school...it had been too long!
-seeing sun (at various times throughout the day). it is amazing how much happier everyone is when the sun is out!

I can't believe it's Friday already. Gotta love weeks that fly by quickly!

dear mr. sun,

glad you chose to make an appearance today. there is nothing more motivating than waking up to you shining brightly through my window. I hope you choose to stick around.

love,
megan

(side note: today it was sunny, rained (poured), hailed, and was warm then turned to windy and freezing.   and now it is sunny again. what the heck?!)
